Wellbeing Challenges

Encourage more creativity and innovation in your workplace this October with one (or more!) of these wellbeing challenges.

1. Go for a walk and take 3 photos

Challenge everyone on your team to go for a walk along the same route (either in their own time or together), take 3 photos of anything that piques their interest, and then share them with the group via online platforms (Slack / Microsoft Teams / your company intranet).

Depending on your workplace and budget, you could then either:

  • Choose (or nominate someone else to judge) the most creative, or interesting, photo, and share this wider organisation (with an accompanying explanation from the winning photographer, of course!), or

  • Put everyone who participates in the draw to win a spot prize.

2. Host a craft session

Run a creative craft session over a lunch break. Focusing on a creative task can give the brain a break from ruminating or overthinking, which is why creativity is such a great stress reliever. We recommend using what you’ve already got available in the workplace – try to avoid purchasing a whole lot of materials/resources. You can, of course, put the call out for staff to donate/share anything they have at home!

To ramp this up a notch, you can also ask for volunteers to lead the session and help any beginners as needed. This also supports the Connect Pillar. Examples include:

  • origami

  • paint by numbers

  • puzzles

  • knitting / cross-stitch

3. Start a meeting with some creative icebreakers

Set aside 15 mins at the start of a meeting for some creative icebreakers, such as:

  • If you were a colour/car/cuisine/animal/season/month/day, what would you be?

  • What’s one thing you do to fuel your creativity? I.e. painting, journalling, dancing, gaming.

  • What’s something you want to learn more about – and what first step could you take to do so?

4. Set up a screen-free creative breakout space

For the month of October, set up a creative corner or breakout space with paper, pens, and other arts and crafts. Encourage people to use this space to enjoy some creative time away from screens.

As with the suggestion under the Chill Pillar, we recommend using what you’ve already got available in the workplace – try to avoid purchasing a whole lot of materials/resources. You can, of course, put the call out for staff to donate/share anything they have at home! To ramp this up a notch, you can also ask for volunteers to share their strength/interests in the creative space and to help any beginners as needed. This also supports the Connect Pillar.

5. Reflect on your team’s creativity

Get together as a team to reflect on times you’ve been creative, in the work sense, in the past. See if you can list five creative solutions from the past 1-2 years. Celebrate these wins and use them as a reminder of what you’re capable of in the future. Examples include:

  • The way a meeting or workshop has been run

  • The approach taken for overcoming an obstacle

  • Ways of requesting feedback from colleagues.

We encourage a creative celebration - something different to what you would ‘normally’ do to celebrate. One fun way of doing this could be using our light-hearted certificates and displaying these in the workplace for at least one week.

6. Add puzzles/crosswords to shared spaces (physical or virtual)

Puzzles and crosswords are a great way to stretch people’s thinking and provide quick creative brain breaks. Other options include brain teasers, card games, and trivia questions. If you’d prefer to provide these virtually, on internal platforms such as Slack, Stuff’s daily quizzes are a great resource.
